Nothing is more satisfying than sliding into a dress wrought entirely by hand. There is an ancient peacefulness to the weight of such a thing. And placing a hand-stitched garment into the hands of a loved one? Unspeakable gladness.
In a fast world, hand-sewn clothing can be a radical act of slow fashion. After all, what could be slower, more manual, more personal, more intentional, than stitching a garment entirely with one's own hands? In this class, we will empower ourselves with the skills to build clothes using the simple needle and thread. These skills are not limited to dainty finishing techniques, but can also be used for hard-working, durable construction seams and other places of strength. Sew clothes for work, exercise, errands, or even for working on a farm. Sew long and slow.
Reclaim the democratic, accessible, ancient power of sewing that needs no machine.
In this class, we will sew tiny garments (or you can bring in a full-size garment project of your own) in order to learn:
how to use hand-sewing tools
how to thread-trace pattern shapes onto fabric
how to create temporary stitches
how to create permanent stitches -- invisible, visible, strong, stretchable, removable...
how to stitch a beautiful seam and hem for every purpose
how to sew garments built to last and be altered over time
how to balance sustainability and creation
how to trust our hands and ourselves
No prior sewing experience is necessary.
