“Tatting,” also referred to as shuttlelace, is believed to have evolved from knotting, which is found decorating very ancient types of clothing throughout Egypt and China.

Different forms of knotting became popular throughout Europe, and it is believed that a transition from knotting to tatting began in Italy, some 200 years ago.

Through a series of joined loops and rings, a sturdy but graceful lace-like fabric is formed. Altering the patterns of loops can produce an unlimited number of glorious new designs and shapes, perfect for decorative edgings, collars and cuffs. Tatting can also be quite sculptural, depending on the thickness of one’s thread, and can be used to create dimensional flowers, ornaments, and even baskets.

This course begins with the basic double stitch and once mastered, moves into picots and chains. Shuttles and thread are provided - all that is needed is a willingness to learn a beautiful, age old craft.

Stumpwork is a form of raised, three-dimensional embroidery that first became popular in 17th century England. Originally known as 'raised' or 'embossed' embroidery, the technique was renamed in the 19th century. Prior to showcasing a woman's skill in the home, raised embroidery was mainly found on ecclesiastical garments. Over the years, the techniques and materials used have evolved to create great depth and texture in the work.

Join us for a series of workshops which will transform your embroidery practice. You will watch your stitches begin to leap off of the hoop! We will explore various Stumpwork methods to create elegant three-dimensional flowers and plants. These methods include appliqué techniques which employ traditional and unique Stumpwork stitches such as: needlelace, needle weaving, french knot, and satin stitch.

Workshop A will focus on building flowers, specifically the daisy. Workshop B will teach participants how to employ Stumpwork techniques to build leaves and petals, and Workshop C will be expand upon previous techniques and teach how to build strawberries and other round forms with a stitch method known as needle lace.
